The Canada-USA match is the first of two semi-final matches on Thursday 18 March. The Canada-USA match will be followed by Mexico-Costa Rica at 19.00 local (21.00 ET / 18.00 PT).
This will be the first meeting between Canada and USA at the CONCACAF Women’s Under-17 Championship. Two years ago, the two sides missed each other when USA finished first and Canada finished third. This time, the two sides are meeting after USA finished first in Group 1 and Canada finished second in Group 2. USA won all three of its group matches while Canada posted two wins and one loss.
USA enters the game with an extra day’s rest. The team has been unchallenged in its first three matches, rolling over weaker opponents Haiti and Cayman Islands before blowing out what should have been a much closer match against tournament host Costa Rica . USA won its first three matches by scoring 32 goals and conceded none.
Canada won its first two matches 4:1 against Jamaica and 2:1 against Panama . It lost a very close match against Mexico 0:1 on 15 March. Canada , however, had already qualified for the semi-final stage and a chance to qualify for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Trinidad and Tobago 2010. Only the semi-final winners will qualify for Trinidad and Tobago 2010.
Canada , whose title sponsor is BMO Financial Group, is participating in its second CONCACAF Women’s Under-17 Championship. Canada ’s all-time record in this tournament is six wins and two losses. The winner of the semi-final not only qualifies for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, but also advances to the CONCACAF Women’s Under-17 Championship final which will be played on 20 March.
