Vaughan had the first clear opportunity of the game when Wexford’s #5 Adrian Englezos fouled Vaughan’s #17 Daniel Calabretta in the penalty area resulting in a penalty kick. Calabretta stepped up and converted into the bottom left corner to give his side the lead.
Vaughan’s lead did not last, as Wexford grabbed an equalizer in the 20th minute when #9 Henry Moody volleyed in a cross with his right foot from within the penalty area.
Neither team was able to take the lead before half-time, and went into the break at 1-1.
Vaughan came out aggressively in the second half, and they were rewarded in the 54th minute. #17 Daniel Calabretta sent in #14 Samain Feras for a clean breakaway, and he rounded the goalkeeper and scored into the empty goal.
Only three minutes later, Vaughan nearly doubled their lead, this time #23 Andrew Barrett found himself one on one with the goalkeeper, but Wexford’s Rahul Madan made an excellent save to keep the game at 2-1.
With a stiff breeze at their backs, it was only a matter of time Vaughan did double their lead, and they did so in the 60th minute. The goal this time came through #10 Fabio Campoli, who finished a rebound into the net after Madan saved the initial shot.
Wexford began to take more chances in search of goals, and the game intensified as the clock wound down. Vaughan’s defence was stingy and absorbed the pressure from the Wexford attacks without conceding many quality scoring chances.
Vaughan then put the result out of question in the 87th minute when #6 Daniele Clemente blasted a long range effort into the top right corner, to extend the lead to 4-1.
That result stood at the final whistle, and Vaughan Azzurri Huskies claimed the 2010 Ontario Cup. They will represent Ontario at the National Club Championships in October.
