The much-anticipated professional women’s soccer league in Canada has officially been named the Northern Super League (NSL), as announced today by Diana Matheson, CEO and Co-Founder of Project 8. The NSL is set to debut in April 2025, marking a significant milestone for women's soccer in the country.
Ontario Soccer, a supporter of Project 8 since its inception, is proud to call Diana Matheson an Ontario native.
“We are thrilled to announce this update to soccer fans across Canada as we take a big step toward our season opener in April 2025,” said Matheson in the official announcement. “After years without a professional women’s domestic soccer league, the Northern Super League and its six founding clubs will fill a significant void in Canada and bring about meaningful change coast to coast. We are proud to launch with a name that will instill pride in all those who play and love the game. With a brand that is fresh, we welcome all who want to be a part of this exciting moment in Canadian sports history."
The NSL will feature six founding clubs from Halifax, Montreal, Ottawa, Calgary, Vancouver, and Toronto. The league will operate on a 25-game regular season schedule, followed by playoffs and a National Championship in Fall 2025.
AFC Toronto is the first Club from our province to join the NSL, representing the Greater Toronto Area including the City of Toronto and the municipalities of York, Durham, Peel and Halton.

While the NSL will surely open new doors for women and girls across Canada, the league will also welcome world-class international talent to enhance the quality of play and foster athletic development.
